Academic Vocabulary Initiative at MMS
Extensive research indicates a strong relationship between comprehension of academic vocabulary and comprehension of academic texts. In other words, vocabulary instruction does improve reading comprehension. At MacDonald Middle School we have instituted a school-wide initiative during 3rd marking period to increase all students’ comprehension of academic vocabulary.
- All students took the pretest at the start of 3rd marking period (on January 25). Students will be taught one academic vocabulary word per day in their English classes.
- Students will take the post-test on March 25th.
What can parents do to support this initiative?
- The PowerPoint slides English teachers are using to teach these academic vocabulary words are now posted on this site. Reviewing these slides and practicing with the sentence starters together with your son or daughter is an excellent way to reinforce learning.
- Also, we have created a set of electronic flash cards, crossword puzzles, and other fun review activities on Studystack.com. Links to review sets can also be found on this site.
