Dear East Lansing Families:
On behalf of the Board of Education, our staff and myself, I want to welcome everyone to the East Lansing Public Schools for the 2016-17 school year. The start of the school year is always an exciting time for everyone. The entire summer has been spent preparing for the arrival of over 3,600 students, all of whom look forward to the 2016-17 school year. This is the beginning of my third year as your Superintendent, and I could not be more proud of the many accomplishments of our staff and students.
Once again we have seen an increase in enrollment, particularly at the elementary level. Should you have concerns about the educational process in a particular school, please contact the appropriate building principal.
As you may know, we are planning for a bond election in May of 2017. This bond would support efforts to rebuild and/or remodel all of our existing elementary buildings. As you know, our elementary facilities are aging and are in need of repair and or rebuilds. We now have a committee of community members who are working together on this project. I would encourage you to attend school board meetings or the community bond committee meetings so that you can hear conversations on how to best improve our elementary buildings to support 21st century teaching and learning. Shortly, there will be a community survey that will be sent out to the community. We are excited to hear what you have to say.
I am also happy to report that we hired 15 new teachers this year. There has been a lot of positive energy expended this summer as we welcomed our newest Trojans.
Thank you for your continued support of our students, teachers and our district. I am confident that 2016-17 will be another great year of successes for our fine district.
Remember our mission is to Nurture each child, Educate all students, and Build world citizens.
Robyne Thompson, Ph.D.
